Kabel Deutschland opts for NDS

Germany’s largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) has chosen an end-to-end solution from technology concern NDS for the expansion of its digital TV platform.

The system will enable KDG to provide its customers with new entertainment offers and services in both standard and high definition. Introduction of the NDS technologies is expected to commence in the coming weeks, without affecting the operation of existing digital TV services. KDG supplies around 9 million households in 13 regional states with TV, internet and telephony.

Despite having chosen a new conditional access provider, industry experts don’t expect KDG to replace its hitherto-utilised encryption system Nagravision in the short term with the competing NDS solution VideoGuard as the Munich-based company signed a long-term contract for Nagravision with its Swiss manufacturer Kudelski in May 2008. It is seen as more likely that KDG will principally use the NDS technologies, including middleware MediaHighway, to introduce new interactive multimedia services.

After Premiere, Kabel BW, KabelKiosk/Tele Columbus/PrimaCom, Arcor, Telekom Austria and Teleclub, KDG is the seventh customer NDS has won in German-speaking Europe.
