Telekom kicks off Bundesliga offensive

German telco Deutsche Telekom has commenced marketing its new soccer Bundesliga offer LIGA total! on its IPTV platform T-Home Entertain.

Customers to the service, which Telekom distributes on its ADSL broadband networks, can watch all 612 games of the first and second division leagues during the coming season, live and commercial-free for €14.95 per month. For €19.95 per month the whole offer is available in high definition (HDTV).

Interactive services such as instant replay of crucial match scenes, news tickers and goal statistics accompany the live transmissions. Half an hour after the end of each match a compilation will be available in Entertain’s TV archive, which also offers all matches in full length for download after the game has ended. For the service’s launch, all customers will receive LIGA total! free of charge for the first 3 months. A triple-play package from Telekom with TV, internet and telephony from €44.95 per month is a pre-requisite for subscribing to the Bundesliga offer.

Telekom’s mobile network operator subsidiary T-Mobile is offering all 612 matches via mobile phone TV for €4.95 per month. Alternatively, access for a 24-hour period is available for €1.95. Entertain customers who order the HDTV variation of LIGA total! can follow the matches free of charge on their mobile phones for the first 12 months. The mobile phone offers contain the entire data volume necessary for reception and therefore no further fees will be incurred.

Until now, Telekom retransmitted the Bundesliga offer produced by pay-TV operator Premiere. But the company has given the contract for the production of the next four seasons to media group Constantin Medien. By offering its own coverage, which more fully exploits the interactive possibilities enabled by IPTV, Telekom hopes to distinguish its offer from Premiere’s. “We will fight for every football fan,” said Christian P. Illek, head of T-Home’s marketing department.

Entertain can be received by around 20 million households using broadband technologies ADSL2+ and VDSL. At the end of 2008 Telekom had around 500,000 IPTV customers and expects to have doubled that figure by year-end.
