Unitymedia offers Discovery channels

Germany’s second largest cable operator Unitymedia will offer documentary channels Discovery Channel and Animal Planet as part of its digital pay-TV platform from July 1.

The channels will form part of the enlarged “Plus” package, which includes further thematic channels such as TNT Serie, Fox and History. Cable customers in the federal states of North-Rhine Westphalia and Hessen can subscribe to the bouquet for €8.90 per month.

With its entry onto Unitymedia’s digital platform, Discovery Networks Deutschland is making use of the freedom gained through its new distribution contract with pay-TV operator Premiere. The recently-concluded agreement secures the long-term carriage of Discovery Channel by Premiere, but dissolves the exclusive binding to the Munich-based broadcaster which had existed from the channels’ launch. The Discovery channels can therefore be distributed from July 1 on competing pay-TV platforms. Animal Planet will be dropped by Premiere on 1 July.

Unitymedia also announced its intention to launch a new lifestyle package with around 15 channels targeted primarily at women. Details will be released over the coming weeks.
