CNN to face up to the BBC and Sky

CNN International is revamping some of its programming in a deliberate attempt to win viewers from the BBC and Sky News. Tony Maddox, CNNI's EVP and MD, says that the primetime schedule is being overhauled to increase its potential audience.

Star journalist Christiane Amanpour is being drafted in for a nightly interview show (perhaps bizarrely her husband James Rubin's nightly show on Sky News was dumped after a few months). Amanpour's new flagship show will feature major players, says Maddox.

CNNI is spending heavily on increasing its overseas news bureaux, with new offices in Abu Dhabi opening this autumn and other new locations including Kabul and Santiago.
