Russians to get MPEG4 channels

Chris Forrester

President Medvedev of Russia has approved the nation's switch from analogue to MPEG4 digital transmission, and promising Russian viewers a bundle of free channels.

Once the transition is complete then viewers will receive digital versions of some popular existing channels such as Channel One, Rossiya, Vesti 24, Kultura and NTV. An extra channel, focusing on kids and younger viewers, will be added into the mix of 8 free channels, plus a few free radio stations.

The new kids/teens services will be in place by Jan 1 2011.
