Freeview HD to launch in time for Christmas

by David Allen

The official launch of Freeview HD has been a long time coming, but finally high definition will arrive in the cities of Liverpool and Manchester as the HD signal is switched on for free in December.

According to the Head of Distribution Technology at BBC Operations, Graham Plumb, the official date for the first switch on will be the 2nd December when the Winter Hill transmitter is switched to HD.

However, the wait may be a little longer for those Freeview viewers in London, while some places in the UK may have to wait until the middle of 2010 for the service.

In order for viewers to see when their region will be getting Freeview HD, the Digital UK Postcode Database will be updated to show exactly when the HD switch on will take place in each region.
