Competitive glitch hits Sky Deutschland launch

The Sky package which succeeded German pay-TV operator Premiere on July 4 cannot currently be subscribed to by customers of the IPTV platform T-Home Entertain on the ADSL broadband networks of Deutsche Telekom.

A Telekom spokesman said that this was an interim scenario until negotiations with Sky are completed. T-Home Entertain’s existing Premiere customers can continue to receive the bouquets they have subscribed to.

Until now Premiere distributed its entire package on the IPTV platform. The point of conflict is apparently the new competitive situation with the soccer Bundesliga. Telekom previously transmitted the Bundesliga coverage compiled by Premiere, but for the coming season decided to offer its own Bundesliga channel produced by Constantin Medien, which will compete more aggressively with Sky’s offer.

According to industry sources, Telekom does not want to carry Sky’s Bundesliga channel to protect its heavily advertised Bundesliga channel LIGA total! Sky, however, is believed to be insisting on making its entire portfolio available on T-Home.
