News Corp marks Star for restructure

It is not just the unprofitable MySpace business that will be shaken up by News Corp’s latest corporate direction (see separate story). News’s Asian broadcasting arm, Star TV, is also reportedly set for a restructuring.

Star TV is set to lose its services where it overlaps with Fox International Channels – clearly the unit of choice under new News Corp deputy chair Chase Carey and Asia/Europe head James Murdoch. Management of Star channels in countries where FIC operates could pass to FIC, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Indian and Greater Chinese operations might be locally managed by smaller corporate structures.

Star has increasingly looked for overseas distribution for its networks in recent years, signing a slew of deals with US and European platforms. These channels could now be looked after by other News Corp-related businesses in markets where FIC does not operate.

While there is as yet no confirmation of the changes, Star’s chief operating officer Laureen Ong will step down from her post in mid-August. Operational units under Ong will now report directly to Paul Aiello, chief executive officer of Star.
