Indian DTH up 2m in a quarter

India had 13.09 million DTH subscribers at the end of March, up from 11.1 million at the end of December 2008, according to new figures from the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India.

There are now 130 pay-TV channels operating (although many more waiting for the regulatorís go-ahead) in the country with the maximum number of channels being carried by any of the reported MSOs in digital mode 233, In analogue, the maximum number of channels being carried is 100.

At the end of December 2008 there were 767,616 set-top boxes installed in conditional access system notified areas of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. That had increased to 770,053 by the end of March 2009.

Five of the 6 DTH licensees were offering services at the end of March. The sixth, Videocon, launched after the end of the survey.
