Carphone Warehouse mulls Tiscali TV options

UK telecoms group The Carphone Warehouse has confirmed that it is examining the business case for expanding the IPTV business of recently-acquired Tiscali UK, and is not planning to immediately close down the platform.

Speaking to The Financial Times, Charles Dunstone, CEO of The Carphone Warehouse, said that the company is currently considering whether to expand the Tiscali TV service, thought to be on around 50,000 subscribers at present. The Carphone Warehouse completed its agreement to buy the UK assets of Italian telco Tiscali GB£ 236mn (US$ 388mn) last week.

Talk Talk, a UK broadband provider owned by The Carphone Warehouse, is also considering participating in the BBC-led Project Canvas initiative, according to Mr. Dunstone. "We might say Canvas isn't the answer and we will go and reinvigorate Tiscali TV," he said, adding that no final decisions had been taken.

Tiscali ceased its Italian IPTV service Tiscali TV at the beginning of this year, and while it did not provide a reason for termination of the service, the company is known to have experienced slow take-up of the service in Italy.
