ESPN will go free for UK cable

ESPNís upcoming Premier League soccer coverage will be free for Virgin Media cable homes, at least for the first month of games.

The special introductory offer will carry the English soccer games as a result of Disney-owned ESPN picking up the Setanta-held broadcasting rights following Setantaís collapse into bankruptcy. Additional games from Scotlandís top soccer league will also be available to Virginís cable viewers.

The introductory offer coincides with ESPNís launch on August 3 (in standard as well as HDTV), following which Virginís subscribers can opt in to the ESPN services for an additional £8 a month if they already subscribe to any of Skyís sports channels on cable, or £10 if they donít.

ESPN is also offering top-level soccer from Germany, Portugal, Russia and the Netherlands.
