TVP DTH platform plans take shape

Further details have emerged about the DTH platform likely to be launched by the Polish public broadcaster TVP later this year.
Satkurier says that TVP has definitely opted for SES Astra to distribute the service, employing the 19.2 degrees East orbital position.
The platform will also employ MPEG-4 compression and offer viewers three rather than the previously reported two programme packages.
A DTH platform operated by TVP has been in the pipeline for the last 3-4 years. Although SES Astra was always the preferred partner – the two sides held talks though did not enter into an agreement – doubts emerged earlier this month as to whether this would be the case.
Although there has still been no official confirmation, support for a ‘Freesat’ DTH platform operated by TVP, both from regulators/policymakers and indeed the general public, is strong.
Should it, as looks increasingly likely, make its debut later this year, the service would enter a market already served by the DTH platforms Cyfrowy Polsat, Cyfra+, n, Orange and TNK.
