BBC digital channels come to Germany
British public broadcaster BBC wants to export its new digital pay-TV channels to 16 foreign countries, including Germany, Michael Kayser, German representative of commercial arm BBC Worldwide, confirmed to German industry publication Kontakter.
Kayser, who is evaluating market interest in the services in Germany, is seeking carriage deals with platform operators via cable, satellite and IPTV. Talks are underway with leading market players such as Kabel Deutschland, Unitymedia and Sky Deutschland. The channels will be adapted for the German market.
BBC’s international portfolio comprises BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle and BBC Entertainment as well as the high definition service BBC HD. The channels are already available in several markets, including Scandinavia, Poland and South Africa. In addition to Germany, the broadcaster is also considering expansion into France and Spain.
In Germany, BBC Worldwide is currently present with BBC World News and BBC Prime.
