Green light for Heimatkanal International
German TV broadcaster Mainstream Media AG can move ahead with the planned variation of its pay-TV service Heimatkanal for international viewers, after the federal media authorities approved the venture during their latest assembly in Stuttgart.
The channel, which plans to screen German entertainment programmes, will mostly target German viewers living abroad. The 24-hour service will be distributed on digital satellite platforms, initially in the USA and Canada and later in other international markets. In the USA, DTH platform Echostar will carry the channel.
The domestic version of the channel was launched on 1 March 2000 and screens homeland films, family series, theatrical performances and folk music programmes. The TV station is available in Germany and Austria via cable and satellite on pay-TV platform Sky.
Mainstream Media AG, backed by media entrepreneur Gottfried Zmeck, also operates thematic channels GoldStar TV, Hit 24 and Romance TV. Music channel Country Music Star TV is currently in the planning stage.
