Now TV: subs up, ARPU steady

Rose Major

Hong Kong telco PCCW has reported increased subscribers for its IPTV platform Now TV, but ARPU stable from a year ago.

Installed subscriber base increased 7% year-on-year to 992,000 at the end of June 2009, while the paying base was up 6% to 705,000. But ARPU was stable at HK$213.

With the increase in subscribers, however, revenues rose 5% to HK$1,092 million for the six months to the end of June, compared with the same period the previous year. EBITDA loss narrowed by 15% to HK$34 million.

And PCCW echoed a statement earlier in the month from rival i-Cable that there were signs the Hong Kong economy was starting to improve at the end of the period.

PCCW’s statement said: “Management is cautiously optimistic about the future as there have been signs that confidence is returning to the stock and property markets and several leading indicators suggest that the economy is stabilizing.

“PCCW will continue to carefully manage its costs and investments while developing new revenue opportunities. It will also focus on customer service and retention through enhancement of the customer experience.”
