Must-carry storm looms in Lithuania

By Chris Dziadul

Controversy is mounting in Lithuania over a proposed new law covering must-carry.

According to Versozinios, a draft amendment of the Public Information Act, due to come into effect no later than December 19, will effectively scrap the must-carry requirement for all but two – publicly owned LTV1 and LTV2 – of the 12 national TV channels currently available in the country.

LNK, the leading commercial broadcaster, is in favour of the change and refers to the current situation, in which it receives no distribution fees, as legalised piracy.

It is opposed by – amongst others – the Lithuanian Cable TV Association (LKTA) and incumbent telco TEO LT, which operates both an IPTV and DTT service.
