Amazonas 2 arrives in French Guiana

Hispasat’s giant Amazonas 2 craft was airlifted to French Guiana last week, ready for its final preparation ahead of launch later in September.

Amazonas 2 is an Astrium Eurostar E3000 model, with 64 active transponders (54 in Ku, and 10 in C-band) and will deliver extra capacity to the Amazonas mission over ‘the Americas’, with coverage from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in South America.

Ariane will launch the satellite (along with a German military satellite) as its 5th launch of the year (it is targeting 7 in all this year) and the planned launch date is Sept 29.

Amazonas 2 will be sited at 61 deg West. It will work alongside Amazonas 1, launched in 2004.
