Avanti Communications is a London-based would-be satellite operator

Avanti Communications is a London-based would-be satellite operator looking to tap into the broadband market with a craft, Hylas, due for launch in the spring of 2010.
Avanti has done very well by tapping into public funds, especially from Europe, and Williams says he will be looking to get a large part of the 200m already allocated to ensure that all UK residents can access high-speed broadband. Avanti is promising connection speeds of up to 10 megabits/second from its Ka-band satellite.

David Williams, CEO, says Avanti would now like a second satellite to be orbiting within 3 years.
No one can afford to build cables to rural areas, so satellite is the obvious choice, says Williams. For the year to the end of June, Avanti announced a 36% rise in revenue to 8m and pre-tax profits of 1.8m after a 1.4m loss in the same period 2008. Revenues are already flowing at the company from assorted contracts in place with regional development agencies.
