A new TV channel dedicated to hockey will make its debut in Russia this Thursday (October 1).

Kommersant reports that the service will be operated by the DTH platform NTV-Plus and Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and known as CHL-TV.

The KHL is a Euroasian hockey league and at present has limited TV coverage, one of the channels to carry matches being Nova Sport in the Czech Republic and another Russia’s Sport.

CHL-TV will operate a different business model to the NHL Network in North America. Rather than the league receiving a fee for the right to broadcast matches, it will make revenues from advertising, which will accrue to it under the terms of the contract, and by selling content to foreign broadcasters.

CHL-TV is expected to be unprofitable for the first two years of it operation.
