Australia's Seven Network is rumoured to be commissioning hit shows such as Ugly Betty and 24 on its new free-to-air digital channel in order to rival Nine Network's new Go channel.

Seven's chief executive David Leckie, who gave ratings provider OzTAM formal notice of the launch last week, is expected to unveil the new channel on November 22.

Corporate affairs chief Simon Francis told The Australian: "While we can understand the speculation, we'll maintain a polite silence until we choose to release our plans."

It is believed that the entertainment channel featuring top US dramas and Disney programmes for the younger audience will be located on channel 72 when it starts airing.
