Digital Plus subs tumble
From David del Valle in Madrid
Spanish largest pay-TV platform, Digital Plus, owned by Prisa, is increasingly losing subscribers, with numbers at the same level as in 2005. In the period up to September, the company lost 161,784 subscribers, down 7.8 per cent, reaching 1,899,216 against 2,061,000 the same month last year.
Subscriber revenues fell by 11.4 per cent up to E760.95 million with ARPU standing at E39.30 down E1.30. The so-called football war and the reorganisation of the football TV rights are behind those bad results, according to the company.
The CEO of Prisa, Juan Luis Cebrian, has admitted that the company has held "informal" conversations with the Italian media group Mediaset, owner of commercial TV channel Tele 5, about the sale of the TV platform or a possible merger between free-to-air channels Cuatro and Tele 5. "We are ready to sell part or all our pay TV business", he said.
