Telefónica fined €1m

Spain’s main telco has been fined €1 million by the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT) because the company was late in delivering its wireless internet service to its competitors.

Telefónica’s competitor Vodafone was the cause of the fine, complaining over the telco’s conduct. But it was not only Vodafone that suffered from the delay to Telefónica’s service. Other of the telco’s competitors in the wireless broadband internet sector also suffered.

The Commission gave Telefónica a period of three weeks for the company to facilitate this service to the retailers. Nevertheless the Commission has noted Telefónica implemented it too late, on September 1, when it should have implemented it on May 1. The fine received was €10,000 for each of the 100 days on which Telefónica was late in the implementation of the service.
