test if the aes key is present, if not don't send the ecm to the card and return immediately

Its not good idea, by 1sec you will slow down all other working readers if you have one reader which has pipe problems, so ecm time will go up for 1sec. If there is more then one reader with pipe problems then ecm time will go up to 2sec and picture will be lost for sure. Timeout is back on 100ms.

Seems that init with 0xff cause troubles with some cards (like Sky Uk 963) when
using is via a proxy.

To test more extensively, but my tests seems to show working better now.
