Do I Need A Smartcard To Use A CAM?

I am terribly confused. I have a Technomate 6900 Super (hopefully changing to an IceCrypt s4000 soon) and I want to get as many channels as possible.
I keep reading that CAM's unscramble some channels but I also read that you need a Smartcard also. Is this the case or can the CAM be used without a card ?
