Yes you can connect HDMI but you need a DVI adaptor (it comes with the receiver).

As for the best image it is a matter of taste.
Install any basic image on the internal flash and using a USB stick, you can install as many images as you like on the extenal flash using a multiboot plugin like Barry Allen or Meoboot.
