The Irdeto Premium card 2 is the next generation security client of
the Irdeto conditional access system (CAS 3) that can be completely
and rapidly updated in the field, allowing operators to respond
quickly to threats and extend the card lifetime for as long as
possible. It employs advanced hardware and software designs to
achieve this renewability:
- Flash-based memory, enabling 100% of the conditional access
(CA) code to be renewed over the air via the Irdeto FlexiFlash
technology
- High-end, Common Criteria EAL5+ certified processor with builtin
mechanisms to guard against card attacks
- Operator-specific memory section on the card, allowing operators
to apply only the security and/or feature updates desired
In the latest Irdeto CAS platform, asymmetric cryptography is used,
requiring a private and public key pair for authentication. The
private key is generated by and kept secure in the Irdeto Premium
card, thus it is never exposed externally to eliminate theft. Only the
public key is sent to the Irdeto head-end systems. Breaching the
security becomes significantly more difficult, as both the head-end
and the client must be compromised to obtain the cryptographic
key pair.
The Irdeto Premium card, in combination with the Irdeto CA devices
at the head-end, provides the operator with the highest level of
security for content protection on the market today. In addition, it
enables the operator to adapt and respond to future trends with
ease by delivering unparalleled renewability in a smart card.
