    Barton - contract wrangle.
    PARDEW EXPECTED BARTON IMPASSE

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has admitted he knew there was going to be a problem with Joey Barton's contractual situation.
The 28-year-old's agent, Willie McKay, headed for Tyneside this week to resume negotiations which were put on hold in January, only to discover there was no longer a deal on the table.
As it stands, Barton will leave the club for free next summer, and that would come as a huge blow to a manager who had made his retention a key priority.
Pardew told the Journal: "I spoke to Joey on the last day [of the season] and I think we were both resigned that this contract was going to be a problem.
"Both of us are thinking next year we will be together and we will go on from there.
"Unless it changes over the summer and there's a bid in that the board, myself and Joey feel works for Joey, I think he will be here for the start of the season. The thing about contracts is, times change.
"I'm not upset about it. I was more upset when we thought we had agreed and there was a change of heart. I knew it would be a problem to come back from that.
"There was a lot of history between Joey and the board before I arrived. I just wanted to be honest with Joey and match him with clarity. That's what I have done.
"I've been open and up front with him - I made him the captain [in Kevin Nolan's absence].
"We decided the best way was probably to wait for the season to end. Joey pulled all the way through and he will pull next year, even if he's in his last year; I know he will."
Barton was understood to be close to agreeing a deal at the turn of the year, but Andy Carroll's departure for Liverpool prompted him to consider his options once again.
The former Manchester City midfielder has indicated that he will see out his existing deal even if the Magpies try to cash in on him this summer with Liverpool, Everton and Aston Villa among those clubs to have been linked with him to date.
Meanwhile, Pardew has revealed he has given a deadline to one of the strikers he is targeting this summer - understood to be Lorient's Kevin Gameiro - to make a decision.

    Ferguson - new five-year contract.
    FERGUSON SIGNS NEW MAGPIES DEAL

Ferguson follows in the footsteps of the likes of Cheick Tiote, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Nile Ranger in putting pen to paper on a long-term deal.
However, with Barton seemingly on his way out of St James' Park either this summer or when his existing deal expires in 12 months' time, and skipper Kevin Nolan and full-back Jose Enrique yet to agree extended stays, Pardew's plans for the new campaign remain shrouded in doubt.
In the circumstances, securing Ferguson's signature will come as a boost with the teenager having impressed in his nine senior appearances during the second half of last season.
Ostensibly a left-back - he made his debut there in the Carling Cup second round clash with Accrington Stanley in August - he performed admirably in a wide midfield role in the final two games of the Barclays Premier League campaign, and Pardew admits he is yet to decide to which role the player is best suited.
With Enrique heavily tipped to leave Newcastle this summer, there could well be a vacancy at full-back next season, although Ferguson's inexperience and size - he has been put on a milk and steak diet to help build him up - mean he is unlikely to be considered as first-choice just yet.
The Magpies have been linked with a series of potential targets in that position with Toulouse's Cheik M'Bengue among those mentioned most frequently.
Derry-born Ferguson's talent has already been noticed at international level with a substitute appearance in a friendly against Italy in Pisa as a 17-year-old.
However, he is also eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland as he has not yet figured in a competitive game for the North, and he is the latest player to find himself at the centre of a tug of love between the two nations.
That has come as no surprise to his club manager, who is confident he has a real prospect on his hands.
Asked about the defender's international pedigree, Pardew said: "If I were the two national managers, I would be courting that boy because I think he has got a bright future."
