Virgin Media is set to announce later today that a further 100,000 households in the UK will be able to subscribe to its pay-TV, broadband and fixed-line phone services by the end of the year.

According to The Independent, the cable operator’s planned network expansion would take place in the Southampton area, where it would practically double its network coverage to include all of the city and its immediate surroundings.

Throughout the UK, Virgin Media’s cabled infrastructure already reaches over 50% of homes (around 13 million homes). Of these, approximately five million are currently subscribed to one or more of the company’s triple-play services.

As part of a new network build plan that has already seen more than £13 billion invested, the operator is hoping to add another 500,000 premises passed by 2012.

So far this year, 73,000 homes in Staines, Derry (Northern Ireland) and other areas of the country have been added to the operator’s cable network footprint.
