NetMovies, a Brazilian company that has been marketing the same kind of video services that Netflix does way before the American OTT's arrival there, will now have another big selling point: access to the sought-after Disney catalogue of films and TV series.
The agreement inked between the entertainment giant and the Brazilian online video streaming service provider – which, like Netflix, also has a DVD-by-mail rental service – is NetMovies' first deal with a major Hollywood studio.
When Netflix launched its Brazilian operations in early September, it was already at a disadvantage against NetMovies in two important aspects. Firstly, the Brazilian OTT was first to market with a product that has since made it the sector's leading player in terms of number of customers.
Then, there's the issue of pricing. While Netflix launched its OTT package with a flat-rate monthly fee of R$14.99 (US$8.30), NetMovies will charge users the same amount of money in exchange for access to not only its online video vault but also its DVD/Blu-Ray home delivery service.
Now, the over 35,000 titles that the Brazilian company was already distributing will be beefed up with Hollywood blockbusters such as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and highly popular TV series such as Desperate Housewives and Criminal Minds.
