Arianespace to launch DirecTV’s LatAm satellite
Juan Pablo Conti ©RapidTVNews | 17-11-2011France-based Arianespace has been confirmed as the space transportation company that will put the future DTVLA-1 satellite into orbit.
The new satellite will allow DirecTV Latin America to expand the number of HD and 3D TV channels and programmes available to its subscribers in the region.
Scheduled for a 2014 launch, the spacecraft will be built by Space Systems/Loral in California in the United States. Weighing 6.3 tons at the time of launch, the stationary satellite will travel aboard an Ariane 5 rocket launched from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
According to Bruce Churchill, president of DirecTV Latin America, the DTVLA-1 "will be one of two satellites that will support our PanAmericana businesses and provide us with the capacity to deliver superior products and services to the growing customer base in that region".
This will be the third satellite that Arianespace puts into orbit for DirecTV. Back in September, the two companies had announced a memorandum of understanding regarding the launch of DTVLA-1, which has now been fully ratified.
