Income downturn for Spain’s DTT transport operators
Iñaki Ferreras ©RapidTVNews | 23-11-2011It seemed the arrival of DTT would be a golden goose for the audiovisual market, but it’s turned out to have become a burden, with too many channels occupying a scarce radioelectric spectrum, and too many broadcasters operating in the middle of an economic crisis.
And now a study by the Multisector Association for Communication and the Information Technologies Companies (AMETIC) reports that the Spanish broadcast and transport signal service operators had an income of €395 million in 2010, 10% less than in the previous year.
This income downturn is due to the analogue switchover. Although DTT has indeed brought new income for these companies, paradoxically, this doesn’t compensate for the loss of the business they used to have with analogue television.
The report goes on to state that the broadcast business has suffered even more, with a downturn of 20.7%, down to €230,9 million, while the activities of signal transport were up 11.2%, showing profits of €164 million.
