French operator Bouygues Telecom has selected cloud gaming company Playcast Media Systems to launch Bbox Games, said to be the first European cloud gaming service.
Under the terms of the deal, Bouygues Telecom triple play subscribers will be able to play console-quality video games and AAA titles on their TVs without requiring additional hardware. Subs will pay a monthly fee to get games bundles.
The AAA games were previously only available with additional hardware, a games console or a PC. Playcast has partnered with publishers such as Activision, Atari, Capcom, Codemasters, Disney, Sega, THQ, Warner Bros and more to offer leading game titles, such as Street Fighter, Sonic Generations, MotoGP, Call of Duty, Homefront and Lego Batman.
Playcast’s game service is already live at Portugal Telecom, for a use on its PC service and on TV in the near future, and at Singtel in Singapore.
Bouygues Telecom aims at differentiating itself in a competitive French marketplace by offering a service featuring AAA games, particularly to casual gamers who have started by playing games on their mobiles and Facebook. More globally, pay-TV operators look for new ways to improve customer stickiness and compete with new connected TV giants.
