Spain’s analogue switch off gathers apace

The Spanish Government is to start the second phase of the nation’s analogue switchover in order to free the airwaves needed to enable the arrival of 4G mobile technologies in Spain.

Yet in order to realise this so-called digital dividend, and, contrary to the plans of the previous Government, neighbouring communities have had to bear part of the cost of the process.

The move was announced by the Deputy Director General Spectrum State Secretariat for Telecommunications and Information Society (SETSI), Antonio Fernandez-Paniagua, during his speech at the XXXIV General Assembly of the National Federation of Telecommunications Installers (FENITEL) in Vigo.

Fernandez-Paniagua said that the Government's goal was to start migrating the DTT channels which currently occupy the radio spectrum band that will be required for the fourth-generation telephony after the summer, so that this band can be released before 1 January 2014, a year ahead of schedule.
