beIN Sport now on Canalsat

Negotiations have been tense, but Al Jazeera’s sport channels beIN Sport 1 & 2 will finally be carried on Canalsat platform, on both satellite and ADSL, and will be available as an 11-monthly option.

beIN Sport 1 is already on channel 97, while beIN Sport 2, due to launch on 28 July, will be broadcast on channel 98.

Canalsat was the last operator not to offer beIN Sport since its launch on 1 June. The channel is now carried on all cable, dish and IPTV offers in France.

Following a spat between the Canal+ group and Al Jazeera about the new BeIn sports channels, the two parties have now reached a distribution agreement.

Bein Sport 1 is available immediately to all CanSat IPTV and satellite DTH subscribers, while BeIn Sport 2 will also become available from its launch date in July.

BeIn Sport 1 started broadcasting on June 1 and was so far not available on the CanalSat platforms.

Canal+ took legal action against Al Jazeera to prove unfair poaching of its journalists by the Quatar based broadcaster.

Bein Sport recently acquired a number of Ligue 1 football games, the main French competition, as well as the rights to the Champions League for broadcast in France.
Until now, these rights were owned by Canal+, which held a virtual monopoly on most football rights.

Tactics employed by Canal+ to fight the newcomer includer banning the new sports channels from it own CanalSat channel bouquets on IPTV and DTH satellite, as well as legal action against its new competitor.

To prove the unfair practices of bein Sport, Canal + has taken legal action to demonstrate “excessive poaching” and bailiffs were sent in to the offices of Al Jazeera Paris to find the facts.
