Marcel Schmelzer: Borussia Dortmund want to secure the Germany international on a longer contract
Borussia Dortmund are hoping to tie down left-back Marcel Schmelzer to a new contract after Jakub Blaszczykowski pledged his future to the club last week.
Schmelzerwas part of Germany's squad at Euro 2012, but he failed to make an appearance during the run to the semi-finals in Poland and Ukraine.
The 24-year-old is a key member of the Dortmund side and still has two years remaining on his contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions.
However, general manager Michael Zorc is keen to hand the defender a longer contract and outlined the qualities that Schmelzer brings to the club.
"We are trying to sign a new long-term contract with him," Zorc told kicker-Sportmagazin. "He is doing an excellent job at left-back.
"The total package that he is offering to us as a player is just super!
"He is tactically strong, has a great defensive mind and a splendid left foot - one that turns out to be a weapon every now and then. He has loads of quality."
