Brazil’s pay-TV market reaches 14.8 million

After adding 267,000 clients during the month, the pay-TV Brazil market ended July 2012 with 14.8 million subscribers, a 1.84% month by month increase, and a huge 31% rise on the previous year.
The Embratel (NET +) group remains the market leader with a share of 53.59%, and in July added 108,000 new customers, an increase of 1.38% to hit just under 8 million subs. The number two firm is Sky/DirecTV which grew slightly by 109,000 subscribers (up 2.43% month on month) and with a share of 30.97%, representing 4.58 million customers.
As in previous months, Telefónica / April saw its customer base reduced, and in July lost 12,000 subscribers, a 1.83% dip, and stood at 4.37% overall. Behind lies Oi, which added nearly 36,000 new subscribers (7.32%) as with 522,000 customers, has a 3.53% market share.
According to market regulator ANATEL, nearly 85% of the market additions were through satellite TV (DTH), with 223,000 new customers, an increase of 2.6% in the month. Cable represents 40.2% of the Brazilian pay-TV market, and in July 2012 totalled nearly 53,000 subscribers, representing growth of 0.9% compared with June.
