Fantasy Post Mortem: What if RG3 doesnt play?
For the majority of the season, I have admonished fantasy enthusiasts for having too many good quarterbacks. Trade one! I often decried. They cant score fantasy points for you from the bench.
The expression I search for right now is hoist on my own petard.
Yes, I have RG3 on one of my best teams. And it might cost me because I dont have a solid backup waiting for him.
In case you missed it, uh, where were you? RG3 hurt his knee in the Redskins win over the Ravens. He said he was fine, there was nothing broken and he would be ready to go. Excuse me if Im going to side with medical science on this one. The initial MRI was clear, but Im still getting darn antsy over here.
If the worst case scenario happens, and RG3 misses time this week, well there arent a lot of options. Or at least good options.
Lets assume Russell Wilson is gone in most of your leagues, because he would be the first option. Your best choices would be Joe Flacco at home against the Broncos or Brandon Weeden at home against the Skins. Sam Bradford also seems like a deep-sleeper type of option, too. If you want to look well ahead, Bradford plays the Bucs in Week 16.
The moral of the story is maybe its wise to have a solid backup on your roster. So if you were one of those guys I made fun of this year because you had RG3 and Matt Ryan or Drew Brees on your roster, well, I apologize. You were certainly smarter than me.
And wish me luck next week.
Player of the Week
Cam Newton has thrived since our breakup, so I do feel a touch of pride for his inspired performance. Newton was out of this world on Sunday, as he scored close to 40 points. Or in other words, the points Akbar Gbajabiamila predicted Russell Wilson would score. (I liked Wilson, too, so I can take the shot.)
Newton has been a fantasy stud and if you have him for your stretch drive, well, hes going to have a nice matchup against the Chargers next week. Newton might not score close to 40 points next week, but hes going to open the week as my No. 1 quarterback.
Worst fantasy play of the year
You know, being in the Rank Tank on NFL Fantasy Live, I get a strange sense when we go overboard on an unproven player. And sure enough on Sunday, the panel raved about Bryce Brown a lot and it made me check out my lineup.
I really thought about a move to put Brown on my bench. It was a gut feeling. I even mentioned it on the air, it seemed like a trap game because everybody was too complimentary of it.
So I moved Brown out of my lineup. And then I chickened out and put him back in there. Partly because Im the fantasy fraidy-cat.
And partly (or mostly) because Im the stupidest person on the face of the Earth. I wouldnt even take my own advice on this one and it could come back to haunt me.
Adrian Peterson is not human, update
Weve already established the fact Adrian Peterson isnt human. Two more touchdowns this week. I was barely changed out of my clothes after NFL Fantasy Live on Sunday and Peterson had already punched one into the end zone.
Although, Jamaal Charles opened the scoring with an early touchdown run. Im not kidding, you almost cant make it from the stage to the makeup room without a team already on the scoreboard.
You wont win green this way
There were a lot of fantasy disappointments this week, probably none more hurtful than A.J. Green. The one-time one-man band had carried plenty of fantasy teams this season and then he had his worst game during the first week of most playoffs.
Well, that just figures.
And it wasnt like the Cowboys clamped down on him. Green dropped a potential touchdown pass and had some other miscues, which just didnt seem like him. If Green caught that one pass, his team probably wins the game and Im looking at a laugher in one of my leagues.
Now Ive got to sweat it out with Aaron Hernandez.
Out of luck
If youre going to count on Andy Luck in your playoffs, you might want to look at some of your other options. Luck had a great matchup this week against the Titans, but failed to come through. But he has the Colts winning and looks like a real MVP candidate, so I cant stay mad at him, though.
Not that he was alone, either. Tony Romo, Drew Brees and Red Dalton all struggled in fantasy leagues on Sunday. If you started any of those guys, well, I hope you enjoyed your time in the postseason. There is always next year.
And if you did survive, dont stress out too much about these studs. Somebody asked if they should sit Brees for somebody on the waiver wire. Lets be honest, there isnt much on the wire. And the Saints play host to the Bucs this week. So please, stick with Brees. Or find a way to trade him to me.
Lets ban tight ends
Ive often fantasized about a fantasy league without defenses. (Yeah, I know, I have weird fantasies.) But maybe we should make a move to get rid of the tight end position.
Kyle Rudolph struck again. Once we started to have faith in him once more, he pulled the plug on us with a bagel.
Dallas Clark, a guy I recommended to my man Eric Young of TNA Impact and the Animal Planet, didnt do a thing.
Weve mentioned how Im the dumbest guy ever, right?
D-Fence
Well, Im not a huge proponent of fantasy defenses. To me, its almost too much luck involved. But you have to give credit to the Seahawks defense this week which posted 41 points, the highest total since the 49ers scored 39 points in Week 4 of 2009.
The thing I would like to know, is there anybody out there who started the Seahawks defense and didnt win?
Curtain-jerker All-Stars
This waiver wire team would have beaten your fantasy team on Sunday.
QB Nick Foles
RB David Wilson
RB Montell Owens
WR Anquan Boldin
WR Brandon Gibson
TE Clay Harbor
K Steven Hauschka
DEF Tennessee Titans
