As far as I am aware a card is always needed in the CAM.
The request for an ATR (answer to response) is always directed at the smart card and the required system reset will not occur in the absence of such a response from the card. Any old previously working card will normally contain
a valid ATR key that should suffice. As long as this communication has been received, the other data is handled by the Emulator software stored within the flash memory of your Humax.
Any card (e.g. gold / silver / fun card) should work provided it has been programmed in the past few years.
The only other option I am aware of, would be to acquire a Season Interface and run an emulator programme from your computer. The Season Interface links your computer to the Humax via the Card Slot. In effect, it takes the place of the card. The ATR (plus all the other responses) are then supplied by your computer through the card slot.
Software such as WCE can be run sucessfully with the Humax 5400 but can be very trick to set up.
