Strong Srt8000 Satellite Receive help

hi am new to the world of satellite,
so to come in at a economic level have purchased from ebay a Strong Srt8000 Satellite Receiver ,purchased from a Dutch family who i believe sold in good faith, but i find when firing up locks onto channel 16 and asks for a smart card.
nothing i can do will override this
would it be possible to download firmware that would allow it to be used as a normal receiver or is it a one program receiver like sky

just give him an old seca one card, or gold card programmed
but you will ahve only 500 channels,and no way to manage them
to flash him you have to change one memory before
too hard and high cost for it
