Manchester City's cycle under Pep Guardiola looks over
    By Alex Keble
    17:13 · MON November 11, 2024
“Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it.”

It was only a single line in a Match of the Day interview that also included an assertion that “it’s still November” and “we’ll recover our best”, but it’s difficult to think of a time when Pep Guardiola has looked and sounded so defeatist about his Manchester City project.

Guardiola shrugged his shoulders, leant in, gave himself thinking time as he stumbled over the words - and seemed genuinely resigned to the possibility that, hey, maybe this just isn’t out year.

Winning the Premier League requires relentless optimism, as Guardiola knows better than anyone, therefore to provide the media with a pull quote like that is telling. His shrug, his almost apathetic response to his side’s fourth successive defeat in all competitions, feels significant.

It certainly aligns with what we’re seeing in the pitch. We can go back even further than the last four games and include the narrow victories over Southampton, Wolves, and Fulham in this series of flat performances from Man City; performances of lethargy and unexpected drift.

Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d'Or
Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d'Or
For Guardiola the cause of the drift is easy enough to explain. Rodri’s injury has clearly had an enormous impact on City’s performances but so too, according to Pep, has the absences of Jack Grealish, John Stones, Oscar Bobb, and Ruben Dias: “When we get the players back I don’t have any doubts that we will be back,” Guardiola told reporters after the game.

But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Five players is hardly an injury crisis. City seem more afflicted by a general ennui than anything to do with quality on the pitch.

Brighton in particular found it surprisingly easy to get back into the game in the second half on Saturday evening, when the introduction of Carlos Baleba was enough to force Man City into a the kind of deep block we have almost never before seen from a Guardiola side.

Ahead of both Brighton goals Man City were sat in a hunched, cowering position, waiting to be cut open.

It was the most alarming performance yet of Man City’s sequence – and the clearest sign we had, until Guardiola’s comments afterwards, anyway – that things are not going to get much better for the remainder of 2024/25.

Manchester City lost 2-1 at Bournemouth
Guardiola’s contract situation still lingers, as does a possible points deduction should Man City be found guilty of Profit & Sustainability Rules breaches that they vehemently deny. Those are two pretty emphatic-looking endings on the horizon, but beyond that is a squad looking increasingly lopsided and old.

Bernardo Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Kyle Walker, Mate Kovacic, John Stones, and Ederson are all in their 30s. Guardiola has built a squad so deeply entrenched in his peculiar tactical evolutions it lacks full-backs, lacks backup in a number of key positions, and relies on a number nine whose very existence feels like a rebuke to Guardiola’s philosophy.

Indeed, there is a looming feeling that whenever Guardiola does decide to leave City they will face a period of decline not unlike Manchester United’s after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Not on the same scale, of course, but, like Ferguson, Guardiola has shifted to a streamlined approach that wins through experience and psychology more than anything else. City’s tactics no longer feel cutting edge, their players no longer in their prime.

A rebuild is in order, but judging by the sighing and the shrugging when talking to BBC Sport on Saturday, Guardiola doesn’t have the energy to do it. The end has never felt closer.

Turkey 0-0 Wales: Home side miss penalty in stoppage time
    By Sporting Life

Wales maintained their unbeaten record under Craig Bellamy in a 0-0 Nations League draw with Turkey after Kerem Akturkoglu sent his 89th-minute penalty against a post.

Turkey were given the chance to sew up Group B4 when Neco Williams stretched out a leg and Yunus Akgun went to ground.

But Akturkoglu tamely rolled his effort on to the base of a post and wide as Karl Darlow dived the other way.

The point leaves Wales second in Group B4, two points behind Turkey and two ahead of Iceland following their 2-0 win in Montenegro.

Wales will secure at least a Nations League play-off place in March by avoiding defeat at home to Iceland on Tuesday while knowing victory would secure top spot and promotion to League A should Turkey lose in Montenegro.

A point against the Euro 2024 quarter-finalists in Kayseri was earned the hard way – often suffering the ‘pain’ that Bellamy had predicted before kick-off.

Turkey dominated possession, territory and goal attempts but Wales displayed resilience – evidenced by countless blocks – that would have delighted Bellamy.

Wales struck the woodwork through Harry Wilson while Jordan James saw his first-half effort disallowed for offside.

Daniel James was available for the first time to Bellamy after injury but the Leeds winger started on the bench with Sorba Thomas preferred.

Darlow got the nod over Danny Ward in goal as Josh Sheehan and Jordan James formed a new midfield partnership.

Turkey had not played in Kayseri since September 2013 when they beat Andorra 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier on a night Inter Milan midfielder and current captain Hakan Calhanoglu made his debut.

Wales began in the fashion of a confident side unbeaten in four games, composed in possession amid the deafening whistles from the stands if not creating anything of substance.

But Arda Guler, the precocious Real Madrid teenager, tested Darlow from range and the momentum shifted as Turkey took control.

Brennan Johnson was booked for tripping Baris Alper Yilmaz and the Turkey forward was soon down in the penalty area as Darlow punched clear and home supporters bayed for a spot-kick.

Turkey were let down by some wild shooting from Akturkoglu and Merih Demiral but Wales were looking increasingly shaky.

Connor Roberts’ intervention at the far post prevented Demiral from a simple tap-in and Darlow thrust out a strong left hand to deny Akgun from Akturkoglu’s defence-splitting pass.

Akturkoglu and Wilson both went to ground inside 60 seconds claiming penalties before Wales had the ball in the net.

Mark Harris cut the ball back for Jordan James to finish sweetly but VAR confirmed the assistant referee’s decision that the Wales striker was marginally offside.

Joe Rodon and Harris were involved in a horrible clash of heads that left them grounded and needing treatment for several minutes.

Both eventually continued – Harris with a nasty shiner by his right eye and Rodon sporting a headband – and they were almost celebrating a goal three minutes into stoppage time.

Harris sped down the left to find Wilson and his left-footed effort bounced off the post and just away from Johnson on the rebound.

Darlow held Guler’s header and there was little surprise Harris was replaced at half-time by Daniel James, with Johnson moving into a central striking role.

Wales escaped when Wilson gave the ball away and Akturkoglu sliced wide but there was less fluency from Turkey until Akgun skipped past Williams to tee up Enes Unal.

But the Bournemouth forward, having been introduced just moments earlier, poked wide with the goal at his mercy.

Guler had another gilt-edged chance when left unmarked inside the area but Wales survived that and late penalty drama to claim a worthy point.

Next Coventry manager odds: Frank Lampard shortens after talks
    By Joe Townsend
    Football
    Tue November 19, 2024 · 1h ago
Frank Lampard is now 1/9 to become the new Coventry boss after it emerged he has entered advanced talks with the Sky Bet Championship club.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who reportedly applied for the vacancy after leaving Manchester United following a temporary spell in charge, previously led the market with England's recent interim boss Lee Carsley next in the betting.

But former Chelsea and Everton manager Lampard is now streets clear.

Next Permanent Coventry manager odds (via Sky Bet)
    Frank Lampard - 1/9
    Robbie Keane - 5/1
    Ruud van Nistelrooy - 16/1
    Lee Carsley - 20/1
    33/1 bar
Odds correct at 1230 GMT (19/11/24)

The 46-year-old has been out of work since returning to Stamford Bridge for a short-term second managerial spell between the reigns of Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino, in early 2023.

Coventry are currently 17th in the table, a point above the relegation zone after 15 games.

Robins a tough act to follow
Mark Robins with the Sky Bet League One trophy
Whoever is appointed will replace the enormously successful Mark Robins, sacked earlier this month when at the time the EFL's longest-serving manager, bringing an end to his seven-year spell in charge.

As well as the minor honour of winning the EFL Trophy, Robins took the Sky Blues from Sky Bet League Two to within a penalty shootout of both the Premier League and FA Cup final.

It was only last season they dramatically lost to Manchester United at Wembley after a stirring comeback from 3-0 down, 11 months on from another cruel defeat by Luton in the Championship play-off final.

Should Lampard take over, a difficult run awaits the Sky Blues, who host Sheffield United on Saturday before a trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley the following Tuesday.

Reinvigorated Pep Guardiola a scary prospect for Man City title rivals
    By Joe Townsend
    Football

"I felt the confidence from everyone. I had the feeling I have to do it."

    Crisis, what crisis?

Just as The Sun misrepresented Prime Minister Jim Callaghan back in 1979, the idea that Manchester City are coming apart at the seams was already wholly inaccurate - or at the very least had been grossly exaggerated - even before Pep Guardiola signed a new two-year contract.

"Since the beginning of the season I was thinking a lot, I will be honest, this season should be the last one.

“But in the same moment the situation comes, the problems we have in the last month, I felt now was not the time to leave."

Pep Guardiola celebrates Man City treble
Pep Guardiola celebrates Man City's treble
City have won the Premier League in each of the last four seasons, taking Guardiola’s tally to six and his haul of major trophies to 18 in nine years, with the undoubted highlight a Treble-clinching Champions League win in 2023.

But for a club yet to discover whether or not they'll be sanctioned after being charged with 115 alleged breaches of Premier League rules, and a playing squad pushed to the limit by an injury crisis stretching far beyond the season-long absence of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, it's hard to imagine news that would provide a greater boost.

Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d'Or
Pep's challenge is to find a way without Rodri
Guardiola, whose previous deal would have expired in the summer, committing until 2027 provides a level of stability and reassurance City were both in desperate need of, and will immediately benefit from in their pursuit of a fifth straight title, something it would be reasonable to assume - given the coverage of their apparent collapse in form - that they are already highly unlikely to achieve.

    The reality is altogether different.

There is no disputing the fact that Guardiola’s new contract comes after a run of four straight defeats for the first time as City boss, but one was in the Champions League and another in the Carabao Cup, with significant caveats attached: at Sporting, in a highly emotional final home game for Ruben Amorim, and at Tottenham when fielding a heavily weakened XI.

    Mohamed Salah
Liverpool are back as City's most likely challengers
Given the narrative, a cursory glance at the table ought to reveal a team way off the pace.

Victory over Spurs on Saturday would move Manchester City to within two points of leaders Liverpool with two thirds of the season still to play; their reputation for peaking in the closing stages of campaigns requires no further explanation.

Most importantly, though, the best manager in the world is seemingly reinvigorated.

"Maybe the four defeats were the reason why I felt I cannot leave.

    "Now, I cannot leave.

"I don’t want to let the club down."

Great news for City, a scary prospect for everyone else.

Tottenham add to Manchester City’s woes in thumping win
    By Sporting Life
    Football
    Sat November 23, 2024 · 16h ago
Manchester City crashed to a fifth successive defeat as a James Maddison-inspired Tottenham thrashed the champions 4-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Maddison celebrated his 28th birthday with a double before Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson also got on the scoresheet as City’s recent woes followed them back to the Etihad Stadium.

After four consecutive away defeats, City had been looking to mark manager Pep Guardiola’s latest contract extension by returning to winning ways at home, where they had been unbeaten in 52 games stretching back two years.

Yet it was Maddison who stole the show after being recalled to the starting line-up by Ange Postecoglou, kickstarting his own party as City’s fell flat.

City had seemed in the mood to get back to business. As well as the boost generated by Guardiola’s new two-year deal, the atmosphere at the Etihad had been further lifted by the pre-game appearance of the injured Rodri to parade his Ballon d’Or trophy.

Yet City could really have done with the influential Spain midfielder, who is out for the season, in the team providing the spark rather than standing at the centre of a specially-arranged firework display.

His drive and direction was sorely missed as City, despite the return of John Stones and Manuel Akanji in defence, were frequently pulled apart by Spurs.

    Pep Guardiola
Plenty to ponder for Pep Guardiola
The defeat was City’s third in succession in the Premier League, and leaders Liverpool will now have the chance to move eight points clear on Sunday.

Another slip-up did not initially seem likely as the hosts started brightly.

Yves Bissouma was booked inside the first minute after being caught out by the lively Phil Foden, whose pass then released Josko Gvardiol to tee up Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian’s shot was deflected wide and he went close again with a first-time effort that Guglielmo Vicario saved with his feet.

City were to rue those misses as Dejan Kulusevski latched onto a long ball and turned inside Gvardiol to cross for Maddison to volley home at the back post.

Foden almost responded immediately when he lifted a shot over but it took a brilliant save from Ederson to prevent Son Heung-min doubling Spurs’ lead with a curling effort.

The second goal was not long in coming and again Gvardiol was culpable as Maddison seized upon his loose pass.

The former Leicester playmaker fed Son and then continued his run to take a return pass from the Korean and lift over Ederson.

Savinho twice squandered good openings as City tried to rally before the interval, one after a particularly poor back header by Porro.

Yet Porro more than atoned for that area in the 52nd minute. The Spaniard arrived in the box to lash home a fierce shot from Dominic Solanke’s cutback after Kulusevski had split the City defence with a low ball into the box.

Haaland did threaten a reply when he clipped the bar but, with some home fans leaving early, City began to run out of ideas.

Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish came off the bench to enliven the attack and Ilkay Gundogan shot at Vicario, who also denied Haaland.

But the trickle for the exits became a steady stream as it became obvious City were headed for a fifth successive defeat for the first time in 18 years.

The final blow was applied by Johnson in injury time as he slid onto a ball from fellow substitute Timo Werner to score from close range.

Manchester City 3-3 Feyenoord: City blow a 3-0 lead to draw
    By Sporting Life
    Football
    Wed November 27, 2024 · 6h ago
Manchester City’s crisis deepened as they surrendered a three-goal lead late in the game to draw 3-3 against Feyenoord in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side at least avoided the indignity of a sixth successive defeat in all competitions but alarm bells continue to ring at the Etihad Stadium after a dramatic late capitulation.

A double from Erling Haaland – the first from the penalty spot – and a deflected effort from Ilkay Gundogan, all in the space of nine minutes either side of the break, looked to have ensured a return to winning ways.

Yet Guardiola was left with his head in hands as Feyenoord roared back in the last 15 minutes with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Sergio Gimenez and David Hancko, two of them after Josko Gvardiol errors.

City almost snatched a late winner when Jack Grealish hit the woodwork but there was no masking another dispiriting result.

It was hardly the preparation City wanted for Sunday’s crunch trip to Liverpool, and the Feyenoord fans took great delight in rubbing that fact in.

They sung the club anthem they share with Liverpool, You’ll Never Walk Alone, and chanted the name of their former manager Arne Slot, the current Reds boss.

Guardiola arrived at the ground with a cut on the bridge of his nose and, once again, his side have been struck a nasty blow.

Despite not being at their best, they had dominated early on against what seemed limited Dutch opposition.

They threatened when a Gundogan shot was deflected wide and Haaland then went close to opening the scoring when he turned a header onto the post.

Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther gifted City another chance when he passed straight to Bernardo Silva but Grealish’s fierce volley struck team-mate Phil Foden.

Foden forced a save from Wellenreuther but City had a moment of alarm when Igor Paixao got behind the defence only to shoot tamely at Ederson.

Nathan Ake missed the target with a header but some luck finally went City’s way just before the break when Quinten Timber, brother of Arsenal’s Jurrien, was harshly adjudged to have fouled Haaland.

The Norwegian rammed home the resulting spot-kick and City returned re-energised for the second period.

They won a corner when a Matheus Nunes shot was turned behind and Gundogan fired the hosts’ second – albeit with aid of a deflection – with a firm volley from the edge of the box.

City turned up the heat and claimed their third soon after as Gundogan released Nunes with a long ball and his low cross was turned into the net by a sliding Haaland.

It seemed City were heading for a morale-lifting victory but a couple of Gvardiol errors changed the script.

The Croatian, who had a torrid time in Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing by Tottenham, first horribly misplaced a backpass and allowed Moussa to nip in and round Ederson.

Ordinarily that 75th-minute reply would have been a mere consolation and City would close out the game, but Gvardiol had another moment to forget eight minutes from time.

Again he gave the ball away and Feyenoord pounced. The ball was lofted into the box and Jordan Lotomba fired a shot that glanced the post and deflected across goal, where Gimenez chested in.

Ederson then blundered as he raced out of his area and was beaten by Paixao, who crossed for Hancko to head into an empty net.

Amid some moments of unrest in the crowd, when objects were thrown, City tried to rally in stoppage time.

Grealish had an effort deflected onto the bar but the hosts had to settle for a draw.

Mohamed Salah: Why Liverpool must fight to keep best player in the Premier League
    By Sam McGuire
    Football
    Fri November 29, 2024 · 5h ago
    This wasn’t in the script.

Mohamed Salah was supposed to just ride off into the sunset at the end of the season. The plan was for the three-time Golden Boot winner to see out the 2024/25 campaign, his eighth on Merseyside, before departing on a free transfer for pastures new.

He’d then grow old elsewhere just like many of his teammates from that all-conquering Jurgen Klopp side.

The German tactician put that group of players through a lot. They played an obscene amount of games and they played them at such a high level, both mentally and physically. For a period of time, the former BVB boss had a close knit group of players. He relied upon a handful of them every season. The Reds didn’t have real cover. They didn’t have depth.

It was no surprise to see a number of them dramatically decline.

Liverpool's lifting the Champions League in 2019
Liverpool's lifting the Champions League in 2019
Roberto Firmino went from being bulletproof to picking a fair few muscle injuries during his final two seasons with the club. Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Fabinho all failed to make that much of an impression elsewhere having left the 2019/20 Premier League champions, despite there being disappointment when they all departed. Joel Matip retired after failing to find a club following the expiration of his Liverpool contract.

There’s been a pattern. Players are absolutely fine until they aren’t. The downward curve can be quite steep too. Andrew Robertson is looking a little leggy these days after a series of injuries. The expectation is he will be replaced sooner rather than later.

Salah looked a little leggy after returning from injury last season. That could’ve been the beginning of the end for him at the top level. For others, it would have been. Seemingly not for the Liverpool No11 though. There wasn’t anything more sinister to it. He was simply recovering from his first real injury.

He’s started the season like a man with a point to prove. There are no signs of him letting up, physically or mentally.

The former Roma man has the most goal involvements (16) in the Premier League. He’s the reason the Reds sit top of the table, eight points clear of Manchester City after just 12 matches. Salah has been a difference-maker and a match-winner on multiple occasions this season. The 32-year-old scored twice against Southampton and smashed a volley against the woodwork late on.

He’s now got at least one goal involvement in each of his last seven starts for the Reds. He’s managed two goal involvements in his last three games for Liverpool.

Only Erling Haaland (12) has more goals than Salah (10) while Bukayo Saka (eight) is the only player with more assists than the Liverpool No11 (six) in the Premier League. The one-time Chelsea winger does, however, lead the way for assists in the Champions League with four and he’s the only player in Europe’s top five leagues to have over 20 goal involvements this season.

His form just isn’t good. It is brilliant.

    Salah
There are no signs that he is on the wane. If anything, he appears to be improving as an all-rounder. And this is making Richard Hughes’ job as the Sporting Director of Liverpool even more difficult. Because while the plan may have been to let Salah leave at the end of the current campaign, the Reds just can’t allow this to happen.

The question is no longer should Liverpool renew Salah’s deal, but how long should the deal be for?

He’s the best player in the Premier League right now. Letting him walk away would be terrible for the club, both on and off the pitch. Liverpool wouldn’t be able to replace his output. Per Opta, without his goals and assists this term, the Reds would be 13th. It isn’t quite as straightforward as that, obviously, but it does hammer home just how valuable he’s been. And his presence in the dressing room cannot be quantified. He’s a leader, a ceiling raiser and an inspiration to a lot of his teammates. Allowing him to leave, for nothing, after yet another remarkable season would send the wrong message.

As things stand though, that is the situation.

    Salah
Salah revealed as much after the 3-2 win over the Saints, saying: “Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club. I’m probably more out than in.

“You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.” Asked if he was disappointed at the lack of offers from Liverpool, Salah replied: “Of course, yeah. I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see. I’m not going to retire soon so I’m just playing, focusing on the season and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I’m disappointed but we will see.”

The decision makers at Liverpool may feel as though Father Time will eventually catch up to Salah and they won’t want him on their books when that does happen, especially when he’s the club’s highest earner. But there are exceptions to every rule and he may prove to be one.

And even if there is a drop-off and he goes from being the best in the league to just being one of the best, he can’t be easily replaced. You keep him and it gives you another two years to find his eventual successor.

Manchester City are in meltdown - does Pep Guardiola have any answers?
    By Alex Keble
    Football
    Mon December 02, 2024 · 1h ago
It took a good few seconds for Pep Guardiola to respond.

He chewed it over, a slight smile playing on his lips, and nodded thoughtfully as if realising something new about Anfield, about this crowd, and, perhaps, about the depth of the crisis engulfing him.

Then he put up those six fingers, not in Jose Mourinho-style defiance as some have suggested but playfully, without bite.

That is to his to credit, and yet it was also the sign of a beaten man; of a manager no longer in the same fight as the Anfield fans.

Pep Guardiola gestures to the crowd
It feels significant that Guardiola’s public persona through this seven-game winless run has been self-effacing to the point of defeatist.

"Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it," was his half-joking post-mortem after the Brighton defeat.

Three weeks later he was similarly light-hearted when telling reporters "maybe I deserve to be sacked, honestly. Maybe I'm still in the job because we won six Premier League's."

There’s that mention of the six again, a new habit of Guardiola’s. More than the lack of fight or needle, it’s this harking to past achievements that should worry Man City fans.

Reaching for trophies gone is a tell-tale sign of a manager no longer able to look to the future and instead peering back towards nostalgia or self-preservation.

Guardiola’s mind drifting back rather than forward to the next challenge is the best indicator we have that the project is over, that both parties might soon come together and decide it isn’t too late to walk back on promises hastily made a fortnight ago.

Certainly there were no answers, no visions for the future, in the manner of the defeat at Liverpool.

Where once Guardiola’s genius would come to the fore with creative solutions to mini-wobbles, on Sunday he went for the same lopsided 4-4-2 – complete with Bernardo Silva in midfield and Rico Lewis on the right wing – that was picked apart by Tottenham.

The definition of madness, as they say, albeit with a slight twist; dropping Ederson for Stefan Ortega, suggesting Guardiola felt it was personnel not tactics to blame.

He was proved wrong with cruel irony as Ortega conceded a penalty with an almost identical error to the one made by Ederson in midweek.

This is not a Rodri problem anymore. Nor is it a crisis that can be solved simply by moving around the component parts.

Man City are in meltdown, the cracks that have been appearing for 18 months (but papered over by the psychological power of the City machine) finally bursting open.

The spell that kept opponents pinned back, awaiting defeat, is broken, the magician’s curtain pulled back.

    Mohamed Salah celebrates a goal
Liverpool inflicted more misery on City on Sunday
The squad has been allowed to grow old together. Successive transfer windows have been poor, with talented players sold and bizarre, hubristic signings made.

In the last two years we’ve seen Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic come in; Cole Palmer, Joao Cancelo and Julian Alvarez leave.

The title is gone, that’s for sure.

City would need to hit their Centurion season average (2.6 points per game) from this moment onwards just to hit 89 points, a tally Liverpool can get by winning 17, drawing four, and losing four.

The next one might be gone, too, or at least it will be without a major revamp in the summer.

Looking at his bruised and beaten face after the 3-3 draw with Feyenoord you can tell Guardiola sees the scale of the task at hand, and he deserves huge respect for committing to a new deal mid-slump; for deciding that he got them into this mess so he should be the one to get them out of it.

The way things are going the Man City board might be wondering if he’s right about that.

Manchester United: What early signs has Ruben Amorim shown?
    By Dharnish Iqbal

We are only three games into the Ruben Amorim era but already there has been a clear shift away from the football we saw Manchester United play under Erik ten Hag and interim manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

United have switched to Amorim’s favoured and much talked about 3-4-3 system with varying degrees of success.

As the Portuguese manager is getting to know his squad and dealing with managing the minutes of players returning from injury, it feels as though the former Sporting CP manager is learning what his best team is whilst simultaneously trying to communicate the way he wants them to play football.

Assessing performances to see which players work in certain positions with adjustments and most importantly how the overall team is doing in executing his ideas.

Being thrust into the busy winter period with games against Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur on the horizon are sure to be an early litmus test for how well Amorim and the United players have gelled, but it’s certainly worth delving into what we’ve seen so far.

    What is Amorim's 'idea'?
Amorim hasn’t budged from his blueprint at Sporting CP and made it clear in his many media commitments before arriving that United would stick to his ‘idea’.

‘I think you will see an idea. You could like it or not, but you will see an idea.’

The ‘idea’ is based on the emphasis of creating space in wide areas and half-spaces for a player to dart into and cross into the box.

The player creating the space can be either a wide full-back in a back five, or one of the ‘wide’ forwards in the front three, who normally occupies the half-spaces.

Rotations are encouraged to drag defenders out of position, it doesn’t matter which one of the players gallops into the space to cross.

It took only 78 seconds for United to score their first goal in typical Amorim style. As Ipswich pressed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, once the ball was played wide to Amad Diallo he attracted Leif Davis out from full-back.

    1a
Bruno Fernandes playing as the wide right forward then ran into the space vacated from Davis jumping out.

    1b
Once this happened, centre-back Cameron Burgess had to close down Fernandes meaning Diallo is now in the half-space and Fernandes wide, creating that crucial space for Diallo to run into and cross.

The aim is to pull the opposition wide before progressing the ball with a full-back being brave (Diogo Dalot) or look to punch the ball through the lines into one of the players in the half-spaces centrally (Fernandes).

The adjustments from Amorim have meant there’s been a lot more chatter around who plays the crucial roles at full-back and in the front three with Diallo’s emergence at wing-back being a shot in the arm for United.

Against Everton, whilst it took United some time to get going, what was also effective was the switch of play, evading Everton’s press from one end of the pitch to the other.

    3b
Although both central midfielders in Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro were marked, a wide switch from Noussair Mazroui means Everton have to deal with a full-back in behind, playing it over the top of Everton’s block.

Similarly, whilst using a wide full-back pushed up the pitch, a winger in Alejandro Garnacho drops deep in build-up, dragging a defender (Axel Tuanzebe) with him forcing Tuanzebe to mark Garnacho inside United’s half before picking the ball up again and switching the play.

    3d
    Early problems
Whilst we’ve seen glimpses of United being effective in Amorim’s system, there are clear teething problems.

Many transitions were conceded against Ipswich and Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. Ipswich pushed United back by pressing United’s back three and man-marking a wide forward (Garnacho) making progression tough.

    4a
It is still extremely early in the process and Amorim will be judged on finding solutions against teams who are sharp out of possession and thwart United’s progression. Compared to the opponents faced in the Liga Portugal the task will be much trickier.

    Substitutions key
Amorim has been extremely proactive with his substitutions, due to a mixture of wanting to change the way a game is going as soon as possible and making sure each player gets minutes so he can make his own judgements

Against Ipswich at half-time, Amorim moved Fernandes into midfield, brought Luke Shaw on at centre-back and made changes in the attacking line to control the game better and stop Ipswich’s transitions. For the majority of the second half, United for once, slowed the pace down and took the sting out of the game.

In contrast to the helter-skelter nature of United last season, the club's new manager has recognised they must control games better and isn’t afraid to rotate his team frequently to do so.

How could they set up against Arsenal?
In Amorim’s first three games, United have been the team needing to dictate the tempo and control games. Against Arsenal away at the Emirates, it’s likely the Gunners will have the majority of possession.

United are at an extremely early juncture of the Amorim process and have not figured out some of the problems presented to them, particularly in transition and when the midfield and defence is pressed.

Arsenal are one of the world’s best teams out of possession, pressing high to constantly cause turnovers, it would be extremely brave to play the same way against the Gunners, but it’s likely Amorim will set up United as he set Sporting CP up in the Champions League with more of an emphasis on staying in a mid-block.

    5a
This is something we saw in Amorim’s final Champions League game for the Portuguese champions against Man City and it was effective as they went long to Victor Gyokeres often.

Whilst the game plan won’t be to mid-block and counter for 90 minutes, United will look to be more compact and could opt for two central defensive midfielders in Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro.

It’s a style many of these United players have thrived in and are used to from both the Solskjaer and Ten Hag days.

In a similar vein to last season’s FA Cup final, the onus will be on staying compact and instead of getting the ball forward as quickly as they can, patiently waiting for spaces to open, utilising the back five and advanced midfielders in the half-spaces as Amorim wants.

Erik ten Hag tinkered too much with United’s style leading to confusing matches where it wasn’t clear what the game plan was.

Amorim is an adaptive coach but he’ll be judged on how well United take to his 3-4-3 style and what solutions he can come up with as opponents attempt to stifle his attack.

Arsenal will be just the fourth game for United’s new manager, whilst it’ll be difficult to draw conclusions from the game, it will be a good marker for how much work he has to do with a team he is still getting to know.

Is Jack Grealish the answer for Pep Guardiola and Man City?
    By Joe Townsend

It's not been an easy 12 months for Jack Grealish.

Since the pinnacle of playing a vital role in Manchester City's treble-winning season, he has suffered from a plague of injuries and loss of form, culminating in his omission from England's squad for Euro 2024.

Despite positive signs in Lee Carsley's opening weeks as interim Three Lions boss, further injuries brought any growing momentum to a grinding halt.

But could things be about to change?

    Pep Guardiola and Jack Grealish
"Our football is always built from the midfield. The quality. They make our tempo and the way we have to play," Pep Guardiola explained after the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

"We control the game, and [against Forest] Jack [Grealish] gave us that pace. When to accelerate and control, he did it really well.

    "I’m so happy for him."

Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne's goal and assist on his first league start since September was widely considered the catalyst for City finally ending their winless streak, helping to keep Guardiola's crucial change under the radar.

A dearth of options and an unprecedented slump in form led him to try something he never previously had: Grealish as a true central midfielder.

"He was really good," the City boss continued.

“I know his quality. He has attributes to play holding midfield: keep the ball, break the lines and show composure."

    Jack Grealish touch map new
Only Ilkay Gundogan (93) and Ruben Dias (92) had more than Grealish's 77 touches against Forest, with the England international producing a near faultless all-round performance, creating three chances for his team-mates, completing two tackles and still managing a couple of attempts on goal.

He helped Manchester City create their most expected goals (xG) in nine games and score three times in a league match for the first time since October 5.

For Grealish, though, there was one thing missing.

    Jack Grealish
Should he fail to find the net before December 16 it will be a year since his last Premier League goal. He has provided only one assist in that time too.

"Playing in the middle, Jack was involved in many things," Guardiola added.

“Hopefully in the next games, if I decide to play him in that position, he can be involved in the final third and decisive in goals and assists."

    Grealish will certainly hope so.

That's an anniversary no-one wants to celebrate.
