Alfred Hitchcock's remake of his own 1934 version of the thriller, this time featuring James Stewart and Doris Day in the lead roles. Doctor Ben McKenna is on holiday in Morocco with his wife, Jo, and son, Hank, when a man is fatally wounded in front of them. Before he dies, the victim manages to whisper something to the shocked doctor. It's incendiary information, and McKenna soon regrets being party to it, as Hank is kidnapped by people keen to ensure that the dead man's words are passed to no one. And so the scene is set for a headlong rush by the McKennas to track down their son and effect his safe release, leading to a memorable climax at London's Royal Albert Hall. The film won an Oscar for Best Song: Whatever Will Be, Will Be, performed by Day.

Another social drama set in post-war Japan from the highly influential director Mikio Naruse. As with many of his films, Floating Clouds tracks the fortunes of a strong woman enduring, and attempting to overcome, hard times. In this case the protagonist is Yukiko Koda, who drifts cloud-like around the rubble of a devastated Tokyo, trying to make sense of the destruction and to find purpose and stability for herself. But, as a lone woman in a wrecked city, she's prey to the baser instincts and financial machinations of those around her... Like Naruse's previous release, Late Chrysanthemums, this movie was based on a work by the feminist author Fumiko Hayashi. This is the second film in a triple-bill of Naruse movies, the next one will be shown next Thursday at 11.00am. First play on Film4.

The film works because Murphy's character is played relatively straight while the creatures are allowed to be cynically sarcastic about him, humans and others species. Special plaudits go to the lab rats voiced by Reni Santoni and John Leguizamo, Chris Rock as Rocky the guinea pig and Norm Macdonald as Dolittle's laconic companion Lucky the dog.

As Spielberg taught the world in his 1977 blockbuster, the third kind of alien encounter is contact. Apparently the fourth kind is abduction, and Olatunde Osunsanmi's sci-fi thriller purports to tell the story of what happened to a number of people who disappeared in Nome, Alaska. Based on real events, the film juxtaposes supposedly archive footage of therapy sessions with dramatic reconstructions as Dr Abigail Tyler investigates the uncanny similarities in the testimony of a number of her insomniac patients. The use of split screen to establish a sense of authenticity is an interesting idea which doesn't quite bear dramatic fruit, but fans of the genre should find sufficient jolts and paranoia to satisfy their appetites.

Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg star in Lars von Trier's horror-drama about a marriage that violently implodes after a tragic accident; and, featuring scenes of explicit sex, disturbing violence and graphic genital mutilation, it's not for the squeamish. Dafoe and Gainsbourg, the unnamed protagonists, are making love in their lofty apartment when their young child manages to crawl out of an open window and plunge fatally to the pavement below. Naturally, their lives fall apart. However, the father is a psychiatrist, and he persuades his wife to forgo anti-depressants and travel with him to an isolated house in the woods, where he can put his own therapeutic theory into effect. But instead of healing their hurt, their isolation, and her research into witchcraft and pagan religions, results in them succumbing to otherworldly influences and a grisly descent into brutal savagery.

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Danish film-maker Benjamin Christensen's seminal, silent, black and white semi-documentary account of the dark arts. Released in the same year as both Robert Flaherty's early documentary Nanook of the North and FW Murnau's influential horror Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror, Christensen's work broke bold new ground by combining the two new genres. The film both plays it straight, purporting to be 'a presentation from a cultural and historical point of view in seven chapters of moving pictures' that thoroughly explores witchcraft, and also features, at times, lurid recreations of the events discussed in the intertitles. It's a real curiosity, and not only has it stood the test of time, but's also worth watching for its incredibly creative special effects, some of which were not bettered for decades. First screening on Film4.

A feature-length version of Belgian animators Vincent Patar and Stephane Aubier's kids' show Panique au village, which concerns the everyday adventures of three housemates living in a very small village. The principal characters are plastic toys called Cowboy and Indian, who share their home with a talking horse called... Horse. The 'human' duo don't possess the sharpest of intellects and spend most of their time squabbling, while Horse's days are largely spent homemaking and keeping the other two in line.

Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza's sequel to their acclaimed 2007 horror film. The original movie followed a TV reporter, her cameraman and the fire brigade to an apparently ordinary emergency call at an apartment block in Barcelona where they were plunged into a terrifying and sustained attack by infected, zombie-like residents. The sequel follows immediately after the events of the previous film as an armed SWAT team are sent in to assess and neutralise the situation at the now-quarantined building. Once again, unnerving PoV video perspective captures the gruesome action as the soldiers attempt to keep the bloodthirsty menace at bay - and prevent the infection from spreading to the outside world.
