Italian satellite TV platform TivùSat has announced that it has passed the milestone of two million activated smart cards just over four years after launching.
The operator calculates that this represents a penetration of around 1.68 million households, reflecting, said the company, steady growth in its subscriber base after it announced in March that it had reached 1.8 million subscribers and 1.5 million households.
Despite the country’s recent economic travails, Italy’s satellite TV market has been somewhat robust. The bi-annual TV Reception Barometer Research in March 2013 from Ipsos and Eutelsat revealed that 8.2 million Italian households have a DTH antenna, around a third of homes.
TivùSat added that its highest penetration was in Calabria, where 14% of households are using its service, followed by Liguria and Molise (13%), Aosta Valley (12%), Basilicata (11%) and Sicily (10%). The free satellite platform currently offers 63 Italian and international TV channels, including all the RAI and Mediaset channels, and 38 radio stations.
