RDK to offer DVB support

As part of its makers' strategy to expand its capability, the Reference Design Kit (RDK) has been enhanced to offer support for the digital video broadcasting (DVB) standard.

The RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle that provides a common framework for customer-premises equipment (CPE) from TV service providers, including set-top boxes (STBs), gateways and converged devices. It is not only designed to enable TV service providers to standardise certain elements of these devices, but also customise the applications and user experiences that ride on top. The RDK has to date more than 150 licensees including, CE manufacturers, SoC vendors, software developers, system integrators and TV service providers.

The newly available DVB-specific components support elements such as teletext and subtitles. The RDK Management, LLC — a joint venture between Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Liberty Global — is also working with the RDK community on a path to support the use of in-band DVB system information (SI) for European operators.

"DVB support has been on the RDK roadmap since the inception of our joint venture, and we're very pleased to announce continued progress on that commitment," explained Steve Heeb, president and general manager of RDK Management, LLC. "The RDK's applicability is global, and these enhancements will enable operators in Europe and other parts of the world to more easily leverage the RDK for deployment in their markets."

In providing key components that will extend the RDK's applicability for use in DVB markets, the RDK management noted the "significant contributions" of software components by SeaChange International. "SeaChange and its video gateway software customers have realised the advantages that the RDK provides in product development cycles and post-deployment in terms of speed to market and innovation," added senior vice president and chief technology officer Shiva Patibanda. "We're eager to help our colleagues in Europe garner these performance improvements with locally optimised versions of the RDK."

RDKlogoRDK Management has announced that the Reference Design Kit (RDK) is now providing key components for the DVB standard thanks to significant contributions of software components by SeaChange International.

Commenting on the development, Steve Heeb, president and general manager at RDK Management, said : “DVB support has been on the RDK roadmap since the inception of our joint venture and we’re very pleased to announce continued progress on that commitment”.

Speaking in a press conference prior to the start of Connected TV World Summit 2014, and asked about the speed at which RDK will be rolled out in Europe, Heeb said that some large operators in the US do downloads to software every week. Most in Europe aren’t used to doing this and in fact see RDK as being “too good” and something that will require them to change their company to react.

RDK Management is a joint venture between Comcast Cable, Time Warner Cable and Liberty Global.

To date, RDK has been licensed by more than 15 operators globally.

It has more than 150 licensees, half of which are in Europe.
