Strengthening its position in the Mexican market and aiming to conquer the pay-TV market as soon as it gets a licence, América Móvil is about to conclude a new fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network across the country, spanning 500,000km, and including an investment of $50,000 million for telecoms infrastructure.
According to El Economista, Carlos Slim's telco is completing a five-year plan to build a more robust network through which it will increase its residential offer, mostly with pay-TV services.
Several moves are expected in the Mexican market over the coming months, including the arrival of AT&T and new licence bids, which América Móvil is preparing to face from a more solid position.
In a pay-TV market led by Televisa and with an increasing number of operators such as Axtel, AT&T could be offering television in less than two years through its subsidiaries Iusacell and Nextel.
América Móvil has a strong position in México, from where it has expanded across Latin America, reporting 22.3 million broadband accesses and 21.6 million pay-TV subs throughout the region t the end of Q1 2015. With better fibre networks, the telco also aims to strengthen its over-the-top (OTT) portfolio, including its streaming platform Clarovideo
