FC Barcelona's win over Juventus in the Champions League final last weekend has reportedly brought nearly €39 million in advertising revenue to Spain, with online platforms earning the majority of this.
According to Kantar Media, the match generated 3.11 billion audience impacts through over 15,000 mentions on the news, producing €38.8 million in revenue.
Linear television got the smallest slice of the pie, gathering €6.2 million on the day of the match and the following day. The Internet and online media generated the greatest amount, at €25.7 million, while the rest (€6.9 million) invoiced by printed media.
"The Champions League final is a national and international display for both brands and sponsors as well as the cities represented by the teams, which is why it's a great strategy for brand positioning," explained Miguel Ángel Fontán, general director at Kantar Media News Intelligence.
The football championship became a Twitter event too, reaching 1.3 million people on average though 718,000 tweets.
As well as bringing great business for the media, the Champions League final also saw one of the most complex Ultra HD broadcasts so far, deployed by SES Astra and Canal+ Group. Although the broadcast was a test it targeted the entire European audience.
