Pro Kabaddi League gets multi-lingual makeover by Star India

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 26 June 2015

Star India is to broadcast the second season of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in five languages across eight channels when it starts on 18 July.

To be broadcast in English, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi, the Indian sport will be shown on pay-TV channels Star Sports 2 and Star Sports HD2, Star Sports 3 and Star Sports 3D and Star Gold. In addition, the Telugu feed will be shown on Star India's recent acquisition Maa Movies, and the Kannada feed will be available on Suvarna Plus.

"Season one of the Star Sports PKL saw us successfully establish Kabaddi in the mainstream, breaking it out of its hinterland niche and transforming it into a sport enjoyed just as much by an urban audience," said a spokesperson for Star India.

"We want to build on this success in the second season and broaden Kabaddi's appeal even further by taking it closer to fans in different parts of the country. This move is further sign of our commitment to the growth of Kabaddi and our broader goal of fostering a multi-sport culture in India."

Over 435 million viewers nationwide watched the first season of the PKL, which re-launched Kabaddi as a modern sport. That propelled it to the second most watched sport in India, with the season-finale reaching 86.4 million viewers. It also caused a stir across social media, recording more than 2.3 billion impressions.
