Through a new agreement for the international online rights of Spain's Copa del Rey, La Liga and Mediapro aim to hit two billion viewers on YouTube.
The competition will air live and in high definition (HD) on YouTube in a number of countries excluding Spain, where the rights are owned by Telefónica and RTVE.
In Europe, it will be available for fans in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Russia, Bosnia, Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece and Macedonia. In Asia it will available for Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong; and in Latin America for Argentina and Brazil.
The Copa del Rey will be broadcast on a pay-per-view, on-demand channel on the Google video platform, and each game will cost €4.99. The whole season, except the final, is available for a one-off subscription of €19.99.
"Through this partnership we are opening a new window to the world and we will hit 2,000 million viewers," said Javier Tebas, president of Spain's football association, La Liga. "This project enables our organisation to deliver what fans are looking for: live games and a digital environment."
The football competition kicks off today (28 October) on the LaLigaTVCopa channel with the match between FC Barcelona and Villanovense.
"La Liga and Javier Tebas insist on getting the highest dissemination for Spanish football around the world," commented Jaume Roures, president, Mediapro.
