Globo is about to launch its over-the-top (OTT) platform Globo Play in Brazil, offering live content, video-on-demand (VOD) and some 4K productions.

Kicking off locally in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo next week, Globo plans to go mainstream, targeting the over 115 million Brazilians currently connected to the Internet.

The platform will offer Globo's main soap operas, series, news and sports programmes on demand. The Ultra HD productions Dupla Identidad and Ligaçoes Perigosas, set to premiere in January, will also premiere on the OTT platform.

"We are continuously investing in technology, which makes us pioneers in new solutions. This platform has been developed by Globo's team and the technological infrastructure of daGlobo.com," explained Raymundo Barros, technology director, Globo.

In addition to live streaming and VOD shows, Globo Play will integrate social media interaction, enabling viewers to comment on their favourite shows in real time. It will also try out new ways for advertisers to connect to a more specific commercial target.

"The video market still has potential for growth in Brazil, and commercial possibilities are just at the beginning," added Eduador Becker, director for digital media commercialisation, Globo.
