Four million of the 13.5 million Spanish-language homes in the US have pay-TV, making 9.5 million homes potential over-the-top (OTT) subscribers.
Speaking during the Hispanic TV Summit held in New York, Tom Mohler, CEO, Olympusat Telecom, said that most of Hispanic TV-related business will move to OTT over the next five years. "When operators launch Spanish-language OTT, they will have a legitimate chance to capture the 9.5 million Spanish-language-dominant homes that do not have access to pay-TV now. Through this opportunity, they will acquire a video customer, as well as a broadband customer," he said.
Vemox, Olympusat's OTT platform, will offer 100 live Spanish-language streaming channels, with at least 30 in HD. It will also include an initial 5,000 hours of video-on-demand (VOD).
"It is crucial for the Spanish-language content providers to deliver services to those who are not able to access the platform for lack of credit," specified Mohler.
Experts believe the trend centre around pay-as-you-go.
