Charter launches streaming TV for broadband subscribers

Charter Communications has launched its streaming-TV subscription service.


Spectrum TV Stream offers up to 35 broadcast networks (the Big 4 plus local channels) in combination with either HBO or Showtime as part of a skinny TV bundle, priced at $13 per month. There's also a second, beefier tier for $20 per month plan that adds A&E, ABC Family (or Freedom), AMC, Discovery, ESPN, Hallmark, History, H2, HGTV, Food Network, FX, Lifetime, National Geographic, TBS and TLC to the mix, along with a few other cable nets.

Unlike DISH Network's Sling TV offering, which is quite similar, the packages are available only to Charter's broadband-only providers.

The pay-TV provider is also partnering with Roku to offer subscribers a Roku 3 media streamer with each subscription — those that take Charter up on it will get a $5 equipment credit on their broadband bill.

The news comes as its mega-merger with Time Warner Cable continues to be reviewed by regulators.
